Area animal lovers touched by the plight of eight dogs left homeless when their owner died have sent donations and food to the Yukon shelter where they are being cared for, its director said Tuesday.
"We did get a good number of donations of food, money, everything for their care," Barb Flanigan, director of The Pet Adoption League, said yesterday. "There's been quite an outpouring, I think from people feeling sorry for the whole situation. Some people have been very generous with food, supplies and money. It's a very sad situation, but the response from the public has been wonderful."
The Pet Adoption League stepped forward Jan. 15, the day after Susan J. Mongell, 49, was discovered dead inside her burning car at her Dunbar Township home. Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip E. Reilly said she suffocated from the heavy smoke billowing from the vehicle's engine as she apparently was trapped inside.
Mt. Pleasant veterinarian Dr. John O'Laughlin, who cared for Mongell's dogs, asked if Flanigan could accommodate the animals, and she agreed. <SNIP>
