Subject: TO RENDER OR NOT?
Hello again Pamela,
I should qualify my previous statement by adding that “All high-protein diets must contain rendered meats OR vegetable proteins” (formulating with glutens and isolates would be another way to increase dietary protein).
While I agree rendering has a bad reputation, but it’s not always what people think.
For example, Champion Petfoods Ltd. is an EU (European Union) certified and registered pet food producer and our ORIJEN and ACANA brands are shipped to almost every corner of Europe. The EU certification means that our facility and our entire ingredient stream are audited and certified by the Canadian Government. The European Union requires that all ORIJEN animal ingredients be derived exclusively from animals “passed fit for human consumption” by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. That means no “3-D” animals or parts. Only what is passed fit for humans goes into our ingredient stream and into our products.
Where ever ORIJEN ingredients are processed (whether rendered or de-boned) that facility must also be EU registered and process human grade ingredients exclusively (no system flushes; the entire operation can only handle ingredients passed as fit for human consumption). Same goes for the transport and any intermediary warehousing of the ingredient; every facility must first pass certification by our government or we can’t use it. I should mention to you that this is not typical for the pet food industry, but we the EU is a big market for us and we therefore must meet its standards.
As regards rendering, Champion does not own ingredient processing facilities. We specialize in making “world-class pet foods from fresh regional ingredients” which means we work with a lot of smaller local (western Canada) suppliers, rather than purchase on a commodity basis. We have exclusive contracts with 2 fish suppliers (they process fish exclusively for us, which is great as we get to set the rendering parameters such as low temperature, and no Ethoxyquin).
As regards the FDA’s position on Ethoxyquin, I’ve heard that before, but think it applies only to fish meal used to produce foods for fish. That said Ethoxyquin certainly is the industry standard for fish preservatives – even here in Canada. Our fish meal suppliers preserve with NATUR-OX (Vitamin E, Rosemary, Vit C.) or, in the case of our fresh fish, no preservatives are added what-so-ever (fish arrives at our door within 3 days of leaving the lake or sea)!
Feel free to write back again Pamela.
Regards again,
Peter
