These two horse came to my farm about 6 days ago. (Today is Sept 1st 2007)
They are 30 years old, good old gentleman. The reason they are on my farm is because Tequila is in very frail shape and Sonny is his partner. They have lived together for all 30 years of their life. Tequila looks the worse for wear, but please keep in mind he is 30 years old, that's like 90 years in human time. I ask, what 90 year old person looks really good or well?
The younger horses on the farm were not letting Tequila graze and were biting him. So the owner is retiring them on my farm. Sonny is a 'Walker' (breed) and Tequila is a Quarter Horse.
Dear All,
I want to say that these 2 horses are not mine, but just retired here because I had 2 empty, warmer stalls for them.
I do not allow anyone on their backs, except a small child on Sonny's back ( under 40 lbs) now and then with a parent holding them, just to let a child feel what it is like on a horses back. I promised them that never a bridle or saddle will they have to ever endure again.
Both horses look much better now, but Tequila is still very, very frail, but his coat is shining and thick with winter fur and the sore on his hip is very slowly healing. Both have depressed immune systems and Tequila has gout in his stifles and front hocks and Cushing's disease as well.
But both are just such wonderful and gentle tempered old guys and I absolutely adore them.
I enjoy taking care of them and spoiling them every moment of their lives.
I figure they have served man for 30 years with devote loyalty and now it is time a human devoted their life to making their elderly years as warm and comfortable as humanly possible.
