Hi folks! Been Youtube surfin' again and found a few brushing videos that will be helpful IMO to you folks at home.
I like this video for *most* of it's info, esp about line brushing. Wish they used a lighter colored dog, but the info in general is good. I personally do not shave out knots, I would cut the dog into a trim that is of a more comfortable length if knots cannot be humanely dematted. It is fine for the dog owner to shave out mats however, as it is their dog and they are not paying for professional work. I dont find it professional IMO for a groomer to do it, and when hair is of varying lengths("holes" in the coat) then mats will occur more often. It is far better to start over, than to have to continually demat a dog.
Ok this next video does show a bit about what work goes into "just a bath" on a golden in a salon. I prefer to work on a clean dog after I have hand dried it with a high velocity dryer. But for folks at home that dont have access to such a dryer, this video will work fine:). I also start at the ends of the coat, and work my way toward the roots. It is very important to brush out our dogs, even the short double coats like on labradors. Getting the dead undercoat on these guys keeps the skin and coat healthy, allows the coat to funtion properly(keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter), and best of all keeps the hair off of everything lol! Note: You would *not* use some of these tools on a poodle or similar coat . You can use the slicker brush, dematter(to humanely demat hair) and the comb on the curly nonshedding coats.
This is a vid of a matted dog that cannot be humanely dematted. Unfortunately this is not a rare sight at salons and not something restricted to low or fixed income families. Sadly some pet owners pamper themselves, rather than have their pet's coat taken care of, ie nails/hair done, nice clothes and nice car . It is very uncomfortable to the dog if not painful to be in this shape. Every step pulls on the skin. Not only that but the skin cannot breathe, skin can tear, skin infections can occur, and sometimes maggots can be found... just to name a few.
Here is another example.. three videos about same dog, but in different stages of the shave. I have seen worse, but this avg bad. This dog probably recieves grooming once or twice a year by the looks of it .
Here is another video with a lil bit about how to properly brush a dog(short but good info), the client is a non shedding one so this will pertain to a lot of doggie owners. It shows what goes on with one's dog in a grooming shop:). Really cute video IMO, and gives some insight for those that take their pets to the groomer. This is my kind of shop:)!
I hope this was helpful info for you folks:)!

Laura, these are fantastic videos !
Thank you so much for putting the up. I watched every one of them, except the first one as it is saying it is no longer available!
I just showed them all to hubby too and explained that is how Lil-Lea could look if he did not keep her groomed if anything happened to me ~ !

Ok, I added a new vid to the post. I also tried to fix the first video link, but couldnt. I dont know what is wrong as I used the YT button with the URL and it cannot be found, but then used the URL button and added the URL above it and that works. Not sure what the problem is but at least everyone should be able to see it now:).

Hi Laura.....
As far as I can tell, you have done nothing incorrectly. I went in and tried to fix it and could not do it either ~
I just took it to the support here : http://forum.freeforums.org/viewtopic.php?t=42915 So as soon as they give me a response and hopefully an answer, I'll let you know. Or you can check it out too, if you a want.

New postPosted: Fri Aug 29, 2008 1:33 pm Post subject: Reply with quote I've seen this other places as well and can only assume that is a youtube issue and not an issue on our end. Unfortunately, I do not know a way to get around it.
Jackal, the Site Admin over at The Free Forms just posted that to my question over there about the video issue. I am sure he is right! So, at least we now know it is not us
